Symposium offering special training on Best Practice Guidelines for water resource protection in the mining industry. The Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) is completing a series of Best PracticeGuidelines for improved management of the country’s scarce water resources. The Guidelines are in line with international principles and approaches towards sustainability.The South African mining industry is a significant user and potential polluter of water resources. Best Practice Guidelines dealing with specific mining activities or aspects include small-scale mining, water management for mine residue deposits, water management for hydrometallurgical plants, pollution control dams, water management for surface mines, and water management for underground mines.

The symposium will discuss Best Practice Guidelines related to integrated mine-water management, pollution prevention and minimization of impacts, water monitoring systems, impact prediction, water management aspects of mine closure, water management for mine residue deposits, water management of surface mines and water management for underground mines. It is intended for regulators, the mining sector, consultants, water resource and environmental managers, academic institutions and other role players. This is a unique opportunity for everyone involved in water resource management, especially in the mining industry, to receive specialist training in the development of these guideline documents.
